Types of Hernia
What is a hernia?
A hernia is the protrusion or bulging of abdominal contents out through a weakness or defect in the abdominal wall muscles that normally hold them in. Hernias may arise through natural areas of weakness, most commonly the groins (inguinal or femoral hernias) or the belly button (umbilical), but also frequently occur at the site of previous abdominal surgical incisions. People with a hernia may notice a lump that can sometimes be painful, especially after physical activity, straining or coughing. Hernias unfortunately do not repair themselves and can enlarge and cause problems if left untreated, sometimes requiring emergency surgery when the bowel is trapped, or strangulated within the hernia.
Any hernia that occurs through the front of the abdominal wall is often referred to as a ventral hernia, and includes umbilical, epigastric, incisional hernias.
We treat all types of abdominal wall hernias at Ballarat Hernia Clinic.
A complex hernia is one that can be extremely difficult to repair due to its large size, location, past surgery, previous mesh or associated complicated conditions. Past surgical attempts can weaken the abdominal wall and make subsequent repairs more challenging. These hernias require advanced surgical techniques and carry a higher risk of complications and recurrence.
