Hernia Repair Surgery in Ballarat

All of our Specialist Centre Ballarat surgeons provide an on call service and are available to repair hernias in an emergency.  Surgery in this setting can be life saving but the approach can often be different compared with elective surgery.

A hernia can return even after repair with mesh, although much less commonly than a repair without mesh.  Recurrences happen for various reasons, including mesh migration or shrinkage, especially if the originally placed mesh was not large enough. 

Some large incisional hernias following previous abdominal surgery or previous hernia repair require extensive complicated surgery that can take up to 6 hours or more. 

Dr Wong believes in concurrent abdominoplasty at the time of major hernia repair to improve functional status but also reduces the devitalised and unhealthy tissues that can increase wound infection risk. 

Overwhelming evidence in the medical literature over decades demonstrates that hernia repair without mesh has a high recurrence rate, when compared to a repair reinforced with mesh.
