Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Some large incisional hernias following previous abdominal surgery or previous hernia repair require extensive complicated surgery that can take up to 6 hours or more.

Reconstructing the abdominal wall can immensely improve function and dramatically improve quality of life, the most satisfying and rewarding part of hernia surgery.  This type of surgery is also high risk and requires preoperative optimisation of risk factors such as weight, diabetic control and smoking status to maximise the chances of successful surgery.

Older patients and complex hernia surgery

Some older patients seeking hernia repair may benefit from a comprehensive geriatric assessment prior to undergoing surgery.  This assessment is invaluable, enabling optimisation of medical problems in order to facilitate successful surgery, and sometimes also determining if surgery is the best option.

Additionally, recovery and functional status after hernia surgery can be enhanced by participating in a rehabilitation program.

Consultations for this are conveniently undertaken through The Specialist Centre with Dr Aylin Aslan.
